For Undergraduates

The future of science is dependent on generous donations from visionaries in our community. Normal channels of funding, such as the National Institute of Health (NIH), and the National Science Foundation, tend to support only research that is close to the main stream. Risky research in the very vanguard of science is normally supported by individuals with the vision and the generosity to see beyond current trends, and immediate limitations. Although the research in our laboratory has been supported by the NIH, the initial development of our most far reaching projects depended on funding from individual philanthropy. For example, we have recently developed a treatment in mice for the learning disabilities associated with Neurofibromatosis type I, a genetic disorder that affects one in 4000 people worldwide. Although eventually, we were able to obtain support for this project from NIH, initial development depended on gifts from small Foundations and interested individuals.  Because of their generosity, we were able to make significant inroads into this tragic disorder.

If you would like to discuss possible strategies to support any of the projects in our laboratory, please contact our laboratory, or the Development Office at UCLA
