Electrophysiology

Our laboratory is using a variety of methods to study the molecular mechanisms responsible for learning and memory, including synaptic plasticity, GABA mediated inhibition, and neuronal excitability (spike train properties). We are recording both the activity of single cells (whole-cell and sharp electrode recordings) and of neuronal ensembles (field recordings) in brain tissue (hippocampal slices).  This is a powerful and widely used method to test the function of specific molecular mechanisms in brain cells.
